In case you were worried, we did not stop the blog. We know all 5 readers, LOL, would miss us. We went camping for one week and a bit. Before we even had time to react, we were on the move to Portland! There were three ice cream shops we wanted to try in Portland, Salt and Straw, Ben and Jerry's and 50 Licks. We tried to go to Salt and Straw but the line up was out the door (see photo). So instead we made the logical decision to go the Ben and Jerry's. This is a big corporate chain in the States, so we wanted to know how it stacked up to 'craft' ice cream.
Flavour:7/10. Dad got the bourbon brown butter and I got the strawberry cheesecake. We did appreciate the non-cage eggs, no GMO, Fairtrade, etc, etc. But the flavours were just OK. They were tasty but lacked the richness of other ice creams. We found the taste to be a little on the sweet side. Service/Location: 7/10. It was on the main street of Hawthorne and within walking distance of Powell's books. There were a few parking spots, but the hobos across the street we a bit sketchy. The store was a bit sterile and the calorie counts displayed on the wall were nice. The service was nice and efficient but seemed 'fast food friendly'.
Cone/presentation: 6/10 The waffle cone was made on site, but was a little dry and crunchy. It still tasted good. Serving size was a tad big.
Selection: 10/10. There was literally every single flavour you could think of. Both expected standards and weird ones.
Overall it was good, but if we had the choice we would pick the ice cream parlour we visited next. Stay tuned for that review next week.
